Injured or orphaned coyotes & foxes
Coyotes and foxes are found throughout California in a variety of habitats, including urban areas. Problems occur when people begin feeding coyotes and foxes, either deliberately or inadvertently. Coyotes and foxes quickly lose their natural fear of people and become bold and aggressive.
Coyotes resemble a small German shepherd dog with the exception of the long snout and bushy, black-tipped tail. Coyotes are extremely adaptable and can survive on whatever food is available. They hunt rabbits, mice, cats, birds and other small animals, as well as young deer and sheep. They will also feed on the carcasses of dead animals and will accept "hand-outs" from people in the form of table scraps, pet food and garbage. |
Injured adult coyote or fox
Do not attempt to handle or feed it. Call animal control to have it picked up (In Contra Costa County call 925-335-8300). |
Baby coyote or fox alone
Make sure it really is alone. Move away from the area and observe from a distance for at least a couple of hours to see if a parent returns. If the baby is truly orphaned, place the animal into a secure container and keep it warm, dark and quiet. Do not give it food or water and do not touch it with your bare hands. Bring it to the museum as soon as possible. |
